
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13 years old. DeWitt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. There she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA, she worked as a secretary until her debut on television in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to rumors that she was taught by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has said that the two never met. DeWitt is most famous for her role in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was the first job she had when she was chosen to play Janet in the pilot episode that followed. She also played Janet in an episode in 1979 from the spinoff series , The Ropers. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984, then she stopped acting for a while. In June 1991 she returned to acting by appearing in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she appeared in the film Spring Fling, a 1995 TV comedy. A character based on her, voiced by an actress, appeared in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was in the episode of Cybill. The 2000s work of her include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
